A place to try on books
I hate clutter. Not that my house is a good example of this loathing--blame the people I live with! But I grew up in a small house and found that there was a lot to be said for not owning much. There's less to take care of, less to clean, less to maintain and replace, less to pick up and find a place for (or to buy a cabinet within which to place said stuff). There's more time for the things I enjoy.
How does this relate to writing? you ask. I believe any good writer is a reader. Reading is where our roots grow deep in this craft. Not reading is like being a painter and never taking in the view. Seeing the creativity in others helps spark more creativity. It's inspirational.
So, how can I fill my need for books while maintaining a clutter free house? The library is a good start. I'm sure there are authors among us who are groaning about now. But I can't deny it. Libraries offer us the chance to read any book in publication for free and because the books go back they don't fill our houses with "stuff." Plus, books that are read a lot get replaced at the library. So they do add up to sales.
But there's another great resource called Chapter A Week This Yahoo Group sends out a sample chapter from a new Christian novel every week. Readers can sample new authors' writing to find the kinds of books that they like. Simple, right? Then if you really love something you can either order it through your library or your local bookstore!
