Acceptance to Preschool!

Willow was ready. She'll be four in October and because she's never been in daycare her only friends are her four sisters and the few kids she sees twice a week at church. She has imaginery friends--Chellie, the most notable, seems to have a bent for being naughty. She colors on the walls, pinches the baby, you name it. If something bad happened odds are Chellie did it. Why Willow wouldn't blame one of her sisters I'm not sure, but she prefers the imaginary. There are a few others--Noka, Nala...

When we attended Preschool Screening at the Methodist Church last spring I got some information for the preschool options in our rural area. There are two choices ECFE--the public Headstart--and the little red nursery school, funded in part by the Green Giant founders. Since we don't qualify for public assistance the private preschool was actually the cheaper option. It's a darling school, one big room flooded with sunlight and lots of opportunities to play and make friends. I attended the signup session and put her name in the hat. Only 20 lucky children would be chosen to attend.

In June I got the call that we were the first on the list of alternates and the odds looked good that someone would drop out. There were a couple of children signed up who hadn't mastered the potty training thing completely. Willow had been potty trained for well over a year. My fingers were crossed. How I wanted her to have the chance to start socializing.

Finally in August it was confirmed--Willow was going to preschool. She's been going for several weeks now and she adores it. She still has her imaginary friends but that has more to do with an active imagination, I've come to believe, than with loneliness. She brings home her paintings and artwork; she sings the songs she learns at school.

As Martha Stewart would say, "It's a good thing."

More later,
Traci
